The ITHQ can now hold in-class exam sessions. It is possible to register for them, but the locations where they take place and the number of places available are limited. To ensure the health and safety of everyone, social distancing and strict sanitary norms are respected.
You must have passed an exam with the Institut de tourisme et d'hôtellerie du Québec (ITHQ) to obtain your travel counsellor certificate. This exam can either be:
- the travel counsellor exam; or
- the travel agency manager exam (e.g. to obtain a travel agent licence).
How do I prepare for the exam?
The Office de la protection du consommateur does not answer any questions regarding the content of the exams.
The textbook entitled Laws and Regulations Applicable to the Travel Industry (19.5 MB) will help you prepare for it.
This third edition of the textbook includes information on the laws and regulations in force as of January 1, 2019.
Important: Some tourism schools and organizations that operate in the travel industry may offer exam preparation activities. The Office is not responsible for their certification. The decision as to whether to participate in these activities is up to you. The textbook contains all the information you need to complete the questionnaire you will be given.
How do I register for the exam?
You can register for the exam online on the ITHQ Web site (Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge recommended). Among other things, this website provides the list of exam dates and the municipalities where it can be taken.
To register for the exam, you must create an account with the ITHQ and have your record number on hand. This number contains 15 characters and begins with "CCV20".
What do the exams consist of?
The travel counsellor exam consists of multiple choice questions and "True or False" questions. It lasts 60 minutes and covers the rules that apply to the travel industry. The questions cover the 2 modules of the textbook. The passing mark is 65%.
The travel agency manager exam consists of multiple-choice questions and "True or False" questions. It lasts 90 minutes and covers the rules that apply to the travel industry and managing a travel agency. The questions cover the 2 modules of the textbook. The passing mark is 70%.
In both cases, you can choose to take the exam in French or English. However, you must take it on site. You cannot take the exam online.
How much does it cost to write the exam?

What happens if I fail?
If you fail, you can register for the exam again with the ITHQ as soon as you receive your results. You will have to pay the exam fee again.
