Before subscribing to a magazine or a newspaper, make sure you are aware of all the conditions included in the subscriber’s agreement.

Details of the agreement

Before subscribing to a magazine, a newspaper, or a book club, pay close attention to the following details included in the agreement:

  • The duration of the subscription (for example, are you agreeing to pay for a subscription that will last for 2 or for 3 years?);
  • The number of required purchases (for example, do you have to buy one book per month for 2 years?);
  • The cancellation policy.

The subscription offer (2 free books, 3 free magazine issues, etc.) is often linked to obligations on your side. Make sure you know exactly what these are.

Ending a subscription

If a merchant whom you have an agreement with does not respect their commitments, you can end your subscription. Regulations associated with purchases made online, by mail, or by phone apply.

For more information, see the following sections:

Receiving items you have not ordered

Phoning the company to say that you don’t want to receive books or magazine any longer is not enough. Send a formal letter to the company, preferably via registered mail. Your letter must state your intention of ending the subscription and include your membership number.
