A fitness or weight management centre must provide you with a contract that specifies the conditions of your membership. The law refers to this as a “physical fitness studio contract.”

Mandatory information

Refer to the page that presents the information that must appear in a fitness centre membership contract.

Obtaining a membership by telephone or online

If the membership with the centre is obtained by telephone or online, the merchant has other obligations. Refer to the page that presents the rules concerning telephone or online memberships.

Purchase of material or equipment

If you decide to purchase the required material or equipment from the merchant that provides the fitness or weight loss services, the merchant must give you a contract that includes certain mandatory information, if the cost of the merchandise is over $100. This is called an “accessory contract.” Refer to the page on the equipment purchases to find out what such contracts must contain.

Cancelling a membership

You can cancel a contract with a fitness or weight management centre. The cancellation fees vary according to when you cancel the contract. The page on cancelling a fitness or weight management centre membership provides more details.
