Grocery stores, convenience stores and any other businesses that sell food products must abide by certain price indication standards.

Taxes

If a food product is taxable, that information must be presented near the advertised price in the store, online, in a flyer, in an advertisement, etc.

Loyalty programs

When a discounted price for a food product is offered exclusively to members of a loyalty program, the price for non-members must be sufficiently visible relative to the price for members. The price for members may be displayed in larger print, but it may not exceed 25% of the size of the price for non-members.

Both prices must be displayed side by side, whether in the store, online, in a flyer, in an advertisement, etc.

Regular price

When a food product is sold below its regular price (discount, special offer, liquidation, etc.), the regular price must be clearly indicated next to the sale price, whether in the store, online, in a flyer, in an advertisement, etc.

Multiple purchases

When a price is offered for a set of food items (e.g., 3 for $5), and these items can be purchased individually, the price per unit must be sufficiently visible relative to the price for the set. The price per set may be displayed in larger print, but it may not exceed 25% of the size of the price per unit.

Both prices must be displayed side by side, whether in the store, online, in a flyer, in an advertisement, etc.

Unit of measurement

In businesses that are exempt from the individual price labelling rule, the same unit of measurement must be used for all food products of the same nature in order to make them easier to compare. The measurement unit must be the best suited to the nature of the product.

For example, all juice containers would indicate a price per 100 ml, whereas all cereal boxes would indicate a price per 100 grams.

This information is only mandatory in stores and must appear on the food product price tags.
