The amount paid to purchase a gift card or a voucher is protected.

Gift card

If you purchased a gift card that can be redeemed for a course, know that a merchant cannot set an expiration date for its use. The section about gift cards provides further information on the topic.

Group purchasing Web sites

A prepaid card, such as a voucher, purchased on a group purchasing Web site is always worth the amount that was paid to purchase it. If a rebate was offered along with the card, the rebate may be valid for a limited period of time, but the card always keeps its full value.

For example: you paid $100 for a card that allows you to take a photography course worth $300. You register for the course after the end date indicated on the card. The merchant can claim $200, that is, the difference between the $100 you paid for the card and the actual value of the course.
