Heating and air conditioning repair people must respect certain requirements.

Check if the merchant possesses the required licenses

Heating systems and heat pumps are repaired by master pipe mechanics. These mechanics must have a licence from the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (in French only).

If electrical work is required to repair your appliance, the repair person must have a Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec license (in French only).

Any person repairing an air conditioning system must have a refrigeration license from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec.

Verify whether the repair person has an itinerant merchant license

Is the repair person you plan on hiring an itinerant merchant? This type of merchant must have a license from the Office de la protection du consommateur and provide a written contract. A heating or air conditioning system vendor is considered an itinerant merchant if they solicit your business outside of their actual offices, for example, if they come to your home without your requesting it.

Verify whether the repair person has a liability insurance

If the repair person is insured, you will be better protected in case any of your property or that of a neighbor is damaged or if a person is injured during the work.
