Since January 23, 2007, Canadians travelling from Canada to the United States by air must have a valid passport. However, until June 1, 2009, they may use documents such as their birth certificate or driver's licence to travel to the United States by land and sea. Thereafter, all Canadians must show their passport to enter the United States. It is the only proof of identity and nationality accepted throughout the US.
