Introduction
Not so long ago, the used car market made it possible for some consumers to buy a means of transportation relatively inexpensively. Since vehicle prices have risen considerably in recent years, buying a used car is an important decision requiring careful thought.
In Québec, more than half of all used car sales occur through merchants, automobile leasing companies, car dealerships, independent vendors, etc. Because these transactions involve merchants and consumers, they are protected under the Consumer Protection Act
. The protection and warranties offered by law do not, however, mean that informed buyers need not check a certain number of items before deciding to buy a used car.
